Starfleet Academy welcomed its largest and most diverse class of cadets in its 241-year history today, as 4,287 first-year students from 92 different worlds began their orientation week at the San Francisco campus.
Superintendent Admiral Katrina Cornwell announced that this year’s class includes the first cadets from three newly admitted Federation members: the Karemma, the Wadi, and the Yridians.
Breaking New Ground
The Class of 2402 features several remarkable statistics:
- 42% of cadets are from non-founding Federation worlds
- 58% pursue STEM specializations, with xenobiology seeing a 300% increase
- The youngest cadet is 16 (a Vulcan prodigy), while the oldest is 147 (a Denobulan pursuing a third career)
- 23 cadets are the first from their species to attend the Academy
Enhanced Training Programs
To accommodate the increased enrollment, the Academy has expanded its facilities with three new holodeck complexes and a state-of-the-art zero-gravity training center. The legendary Kobayashi Maru test has been updated with 147 new scenarios, incorporating lessons learned from recent Dominion War encounters.
Commandant of Cadets, Captain Saavik, emphasized the Academy’s commitment to excellence: “These cadets represent the future of Starfleet. They will face challenges we cannot yet imagine, and we will prepare them for anything the universe might present.”
The four-year program will culminate in 2406 with commissioning ceremonies and assignments throughout Starfleet’s expanding fleet of over 8,000 active vessels.
