Deep Space Exploration Protocols

Mission Statement

Starfleet’s primary mission of exploration requires standardized protocols to ensure the safety of crew and preservation of scientific discovery while venturing into unknown space.

Pre-Mission Requirements

  • Complete stellar cartography analysis of target region
  • Long-range sensor sweeps for anomalies
  • Review of all historical data from the sector
  • Full ship diagnostic and supply check
  • Crew psychological evaluations for extended missions

Survey Classifications

Class 1: Automated Probe Survey

Unmanned reconnaissance of stellar phenomena and planetary systems

Class 2: Long-Range Survey

Ship-based sensor analysis without direct system entry

Class 3: Orbital Survey

Detailed scanning from planetary orbit, no surface contact

Class 4: Surface Survey

Away team deployment for direct investigation

Class 5: Extensive Cultural Survey

Long-term observation and analysis of developing civilizations

Anomaly Response Protocols

Upon discovery of spatial anomalies, temporal distortions, or unknown phenomena:

  1. Maintain safe distance (minimum 100,000 kilometers)
  2. Deploy Class-5 probe for initial analysis
  3. Establish containment field if necessary
  4. Transmit findings to Starfleet Science Division
  5. Await specialist team if phenomenon exceeds ship capabilities

Charting Standards

All discoveries must be catalogued according to Starfleet Stellar Cartography standards, including stellar classification, planetary surveys, and notation of any biological or technological findings.
